FDSN 0100 FASHION ART AND DESIGN LABORATORY
This no-credit class is open to all students who need additional help in drawing and rendering.

GNST 4101 STUDY TOUR IN EUROPE
An optional course. ACA will invite students to see the world of fashion through a visit to important industry and cultural events in Europe. The ability to judge significant factors of fashion and to analyze potential trends is developed. Students take field trips to major fashion houses, trade shows, and similar function. Special invitations to opera performances, art galleries, and museum exhibitions broaden creativity. The prepa
ration of reports develops critical judgment. Prominent member of the fashion world lecture and give presentations as part of the course. Students will also turn in a research paper on a selected topic.

1ST YEAR / QUARTER 1

FDSN 1001 MODEL VIVANT I
The purpose of this course is to resolve the fears often associated with dimension and perspective drawing and to furnish students a working knowledge of the subject. Students will learn the basics of line drawing, the use of hand skill, hints on drawing circles, cylinders, and objects of different textures in perspective. Use of pencil, ball point pen, and different media will be explored.

FDSN 1010 COLOR LABORATORY
Basic understanding of color theory, color combinations, and the use of color in art and life. Projects include development of color wheels with creative shapes in mind, analysis of color schemes, and special use of intensity, value, and hue, focusing on color theory as developed in the Western oil painting tradition (from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance to the present).

FDSN 1121 FASHION ART & DESIGN I                                                                     
Students learn how to develop and draw fundamental fashion figures. This course will stress the movement and proportions of both male and female fashion figures and garment details through analysis of photographs and figure research as a basis for the creation of fashion design sketches in pencil and watercolor.

GNST 1000 ENGLISH COMPOSITION
Writing of essays. Reading for ideas. General review of grammar and mechanics with special attention to common usage errors. Spelling and punctuation, sentence development and variety, paragraph development, prewriting and outlining techniques, structure, and composition of the five paragraph essay are emphasized.                                                                                                                                                    3 UNITS: 3 HOURS LECTURE PER WEEK

FDSN 1002 MODEL VIVANT II
Prerequisite: FDSN 1001
Training in advanced anatomical and live nude model sketching as well as still life sketching. Emphasis on drawing the human head, body, hands; including proportions, head types, structure, anatomy, aging, facial features. Training includes attention to the psychology of movement; dynamic wrinkles and drapery; and solutions for drawing the clothed figure.

FDSN 1122 FASHION ART & DESIGN II
Prerequisites: FDSN 1121, FDSN 1001
An intermediate fashion sketching class emphasizing mixed media that focuses on the development of drawing technical flats and the rendering of various fabric textures, weights, and patterns of garment details. Research is emphasized.

PDSN 1211 PATTERN DESIGN I
Basic understanding of fundamental flat pattern making, detailed body measurements adapted to building bodice blocks on dotted paper. Each human body is unique. Thus, students will learn the theory of body form and the mastery of fitting different human bodies through the scientific application of measuring techniques. Class includes structures for sleeve and body styling. Course recommended for fashion design students.

GNST 1600 SURVEY OF COLLEGE MATHEMATICS
This course reviews and applies statistics, metrics, and algebraic and geometric equations that are commonly applied to business practices. The emphasis is on the integration of mathematics in the business environment, especially the fashion industry.

CDSN 1041 COSTUME HISTORY I
A general survey course tracing the change of western clothing tradition as a source of fashion and design, set against the development of culture from antiquity to the 19TH century. Students begin with an exploration of the Western ideals of beauty and continue with a specific study of the major areas of fashion revivals: classic, exotic, country and romantic.

FDSN 1111 TRENDS & FASHION I
Prerequisite: FDSN 1122
This course has two goals: 1) to develop a basic awareness of the fundamentals of all aspects of the business of fashion; and 2) to study of the flow of European and American Haute Couture to Prêt-a-porter. This course introduces students to famous designers; students then research 4- 5 designers followed by a presentation of their life story.

FDSN 1123 FASHION ART & DESIGN III
Prerequisites: FDSN 1122, FDSN 1002
An advanced fashion sketching class stressing the student's own sketching style, and the perfection of fashion figure poses. This course will specifically explore the rendering of fabric, drape, texture, color, mood, and attitude, and will further refine drawing skills. The development of the croquis (quick sketch) and fashion proportion will be emphasized and held to industry standards. Emphasis will also be on how to develop and render fashion illustrations that communicate the unique fit, finish, construction, details, fabric properties and attitude of a fashion designer.

GNST 1101 HISTORY OF ART & CIVILIZATION I
An introduction to the ideas, society and arts of Western and non-Western civilization, from the ancient Greeks and the Renaissance through the end of the 18th Century, with an emphasis on the relationship of visual art forms to each other and the cultural and ideological context.

CDSN 1042 COSTUME HISTORY II
Prerequisite: FDSN 1041
The in-depth study of the universe of couture: fashion creators, trends and the political and cultural climate that has created men's and women's fashion from the beginning of the
19th century to the present day.

FDSN 1112 TRENDS & FASHION II
Prerequisite: FDSN 1111
This course concentrates on developing an idea resource book based on the analysis and discussion of different garments [clipped and sorted] from fashion magazines and other media. The student will develop an awareness of fashion trends.

TDSN 1200 TEXTILE LAB
Students are introduced to the basic properties of textiles. Focus is placed on the identification of woven and non-woven fabrics. The course includes hands-on analysis of fabric swatches Students also gain practical experience in dye processes and burnt testing.

GNST 1500 HUMAN STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION

FDSN 2111 TRENDS & CYCLES IN FASHION I
Prerequisites: FDSN 1112
A study of the history of fashion from the Antiquity to the 19th century, with emphasis on recognition and understanding of trends and cycles and their application to current fashion.                                                     3 UNITS: 3 HOURS LECTURE/LAB PER WEEK

FDSN 2121 ADVANCED DESIGN STUDIO I
Prerequisites: FDSN 1123, FDSN 1112
This course provides a foundation in fashion and the basics of designing separates and causal apparel for the sports wear market. Students work through carefully selected projects aimed at developing research skills, interpreting and developing ideas, creative design and the ability to communicate ideas fluently and quickly in rough form on paper. Students gain confidence in their work through critique. Students will be introduced to pattern designers.

FDSN 2211 DIGITAL FASHION DESIGN I
Prerequisites: FDSN 1123
An introduction to basic computer language and practices, employing Macintosh computer and related digital devices: scanners, printers, Wacom tablets, and internet use. Students use Adobe Photoshop to create repeat patterns and a dynamic collection of storyboards.

GNST 2040 PUBLIC SPEAKING
Prerequisites: GNST 1000
A course in public speaking featuring narrative, persuasive, informational problem-solving and extemporaneous speeches presented to the class. The emphasis is on organization and use of supporting detail, clarity of content, and professional presentation techniques. This includes the quality of confidence, facility or delivery, and adeptness in using visual aids.

FDSN 2112 TRENDS & CYCLES IN FASHION II
Prerequisites: FDSN 2111, FDSN 2121
A study of the history of fashion that examines the trends and cycles of fashion in Europe and the United States in the 19th and the 20th century and their application to current fashion.

FDSN 2122 ADVANCED DESIGN STUDIO II
Prerequisites: FDSN 2121, FDSN 2111
The use and understanding of stretch, knit, and woven fabrics to create body contouring designs for sportswear and evening wear markets are explored. Applications of denim principles to active sports wear, including swim wear. Students will work with pattern designers.

FDSN 2212 DIGITAL FASHION DESIGN II
Prerequisite: FDSN 2211, FDSN 2121
An intermediate class that offers students hands-on experience in drawing flat technical sketches and crating accurate garment details. Continuing their use of digital knowledge, students combine Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Streamline.

GNST 2600 GENERAL ECONOMICS                                                                                                    Prerequisites: GNST 1600                                                                                                                                  A survey of basic microeconomic principles and problems. Students study the concepts of markets, supply and demand, GNP, inflation, monetary policy, and types of economic systems.

2ND YEAR / QUARTER 3

FDSN 2010 COLOR HARMONY LABORATORY
Prerequisite: FDSN 1010
An intensive lab that trains students to sharpen their visual awareness of color differences as well to develop new schemes of color to create upcoming fashion collections through the use of fabrication and different media. This class is especially designed to encourage exploration of individual creativity.

TDSN 2020 EMBELLISHMENT
Prerequisite: FDSN 1200, FDSN 2112
Application of design principles to the embellishment of garments and accessories, with emphasis on techniques, creation of original designs, and fashion trends. Embellishment includes embroidery, silks screening, crystal and nail head, appliqué, etc. Techniques are developed through hands-on experimentation, as well as finishes and hand-printing or computer processing.

FDSN 2123 ADVANCED DESIGN STUDIO III
Prerequisites: FDSN 2122, FDSN 2112
Students are encouraged to analyze and develop individual design strengths concentrating on active wear. Students will learn the different fabrics and their qualities related to active wear. Beginning class in development of collection for mini Debut Fashion Show. Working with pattern designers, students will present active wear, including ski wear, as well as apparel for tennis, jogging, riding, sailing, golf and other sports.

GNST 2300 INTRODUCTORY PSYCHOLOGY
Principles of human behavior; physiological foundations, influence of heredity and environment; sense-perception, attention, capacities and abilities; learning; emotion and motivation; special emphasis on personality development and adjustment. Special emphasis on states of consciousness: language, memory, learning and their relationship to the arts. Introduction to the theories of Freud and Jung; Behavioral and Humanist Psychology.

FDSN 2140 FASHION SHOW PORTFOLIO
Prerequisites: FDSN 2123, FDSN 2020, FDSN 2010
Each student develops a collection in an individualized area of apparel specialization. A representative group of samples from the collection is completed through individual study under the guidance of an experienced design instructor. MNFG 2220 CELL MANUFACTURING
Prerequisites: FDSN 2123, FDSN 2020, PDSN 1121
This course is an introduction to the apparel industry. Students will learn how the industry operates with regard to the creation, production and marketing of apparel. The purpose of the course is to introduce and communicate manufacturing processes. Students will develop a working relationship with fashion and pattern designers to gain working knowledge of terms and methods of the industry. Fashion and pattern designer/assistant fashion and pattern designer sample-room practices are incorporated.

FDSN 2230 FASHION SHOW PREPARATION
Prerequisites: FDSN 2123, FDSN 2020
Students learn the importance of how a balanced collection is developed through meetings, discussions, and modification with pattern designer and self-prepared fit model. Each student will develop a portfolio collection in an individualized area of apparel specialization. Students will learn application of digital skills to portfolio development.

GNST 2510 SOCIOLOGY: “BUSINESS REALITIES”                                                                    Prerequisites: GNST 2600, GNST 2040, GNST 2300                                                                       “Business Realities” is an interdisciplinary social science course that concentrates on the transition each graduate encounters as they transform from a student to a business professional. The class emphasizes freelance issues such as self-marketing, pricing, copyright law, starting a business and financial considerations. FDSN 3111 TRENDS & PREVISION I
Prerequisite: FDSN 2112
A course that prepares students to predict upcoming fashion trends by developing cognitive and visual skills under the supervision of a professional designer. Student emphasis on focusing on the objective, developing a strategy, determining design criteria, doing research, and crating a concept. This course will examine each of these steps in detail, encouraging students to develop their own concepts.

FDSN 3121 CREATIVE FASHION DESIGN COLLECTION I
Prerequisite: FDSN 2140
Students learn the importance of how a balanced collection is developed through meetings and discussions with experienced designers. Students utilize the resources and research techniques necessary to keep apace with changing fashion trends, and to differentiate the levels of fashion, ranging from Junior lines to the Haute Couture level of collections.

FDSN 3200 DESIGN INTERPRETATION & IMAGES
Prerequisite: FDSN 2123, FDSN 2220
Unique class set up by the President of ACA that explores the symbiotic relationship between pattern design and fashion design. This course is designed as an exercise for upcoming industry experience.

GNST 3000 ADVANCED COMPOSITION AND CRITICAL THINKING
Prerequisite: GNST 2040
Principles of critical thinking applied to writing and reading arguments on complex current moral issues and enduring questions; inductive and deductive reasoning; persuasion; introduction to fallacies; analysis and evaluation of appropriate prose models, including those employing methods of argument unique to specific disciplines; selective use of citation and documentation; writing of research papers. Students will also apply conceptual thinking to fashion design blending their creative impulses and cultural influences to present innovative design solutions to reach beyond popular forecasts.

A course designed to help students develop creative and prediction skills domestically and internationally. In conjunction with events throughout the world, this course emphasizes the movement of social, political, and cultural aspects of art and entertainment. Field trips and guest speakers.

FDSN 3122 CREATIVE FASHION DESIGN COLLECTION II
Prerequisites: FDSN 3121, FDSN 3111
An advanced course that develops student strategies, research skills, conceptual and design criteria techniques required to create their own fashion collection. Fashion sketches are presented: design groupings, design detail, silhouette, fabrication and color. This course is a prerequisite for the Gallery Fashion Show class.

TDSN 3201 TEXTILE ENGINEERING I
Prerequisite: FDSN 1200, FDSN 2020
Students will further their understanding of fabric and printing techniques in order to produce fabric from their original artwork. Students will also be taught various advanced surface treatments on cloth, including burn-out and dying.

GNST 3102 HISTORY OF ART & CIVILIZATION II                                                                    Prerequisites: GNST 1101
An introduction to the ideas, society and arts of Western and non-Western civilization, from the 19th century age of Realism through 20th  Century Modernism and Post-Modernism, with an emphasis on the relationship of visual art forms to each other and the cultural and ideological context.

Student will further build on their technical skills and broaden their knowledge of printing. Concentration on the compatibility of fabrics to match performance guidelines and their marketability.

Prerequisite: FDSN 2212
An advanced class that offers students hands-on experience in preparing fabric and print concepts, story boards, and color presentations using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

FDSN 3240 FASHION ACCESSORIES
Prerequisite: FDSN 3122, FDSN 3112
A course that emphasizes the importance of accessorizing to fashion by incorporating beauty through the creation of buttons, buckles, corsages, broches, and more.

GNST 3140 VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY                                                                                         Prerequisites: GNST 3102, GNST 2300                                                                                                   Visual Anthropology is an examination of visual culture and its representation by anthropologists. The course will look at universal meanings behind common visual symbols as well as the main patterns of difference between types of cultures. Throughout the course, videos made by anthropologists about other cultures will show the history of change in representation and the meaning of exotic visual symbols to Western culture as a whole.                                                                                                                                  3 UNITS: 3 HOURS LECTURE PER WEEK

TDSN 3210 INTERNATIONAL TEXTILES & APPAREL
Prerequisite: FDSN 3202
Study on textile material with an emphasis on the factors that produce a successful apparel fabric from international markets. Fabric characteristics such as appearance, drapability, hand, and performance, as well as sorting of fabrics for different levels of design markets are studied. Students will explore techniques for utilizing computers as a design tool.

MNFG 3220 INTERMEDIATE MANUFACTURING
Prerequisites: FDSN 2220, FDSN 3201
An intermediate course that explores the world of apparel manufacturing, including production, sourcing, control, planning, costing, resources, allocation and feasibility. Projects including following a product from concept to production and delivery of the product to the retailer.

MNFG 3221 ANALYSIS OF HAUTE COUTURE GARMENT DESIGN

A current overview of Haute Couture garment design, with an emphasis on students developing patterns in this highly specialized area.

FDSN 4121 SENIOR CREATIVE DESIGN LABORATORY I
Prerequisites: FDSN 3140
Students are offered an intensive learning environment that draws on their creative impulses and cultural influences to present innovative design solutions that reach beyond popular forecasts. Students will work intensively on creating a collection of sportswear by utilizing resources from museum collections, fashion publications, retailers, forecasting services, and more.

FDSN 4211 CREATIVE DIGITAL DESIGN I
Prerequisite: FDSN 2212
This course is designed to develop cognitive, creative and problem-solving skills in relation to design development. Emphasis on understanding and evaluating information, developing research skills, and creating a symbolic language for concept-based design solutions.

GNST 4000 WORLD LITERATURE: REALISM AND MODERNISM
Prerequisite: GNST 3000
Examines literary works of Western and non-Western civilizations from the 19TH Century through the modern era, works that are important to subsequent writing and thought.

MNGT 4300 SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT                                                                             Prerequisite: GNST 2510                                                                                                                               This course is designed for students who ultimately are going to open and run their own businesses, with an emphasis on the fashion industry. The course will take the student from the basics of choosing a legal business form, through accounting for Management, Financial Planning, Basics of Income Tax, Investment Management and Wealth Building, Branding and Trademarks, Marketing and Sales, and a wealth of information on the process of developing effective business habits that lead to success. We will examine the entire process of Motivation, Discipline, Time Management, Goal Setting, Proven Success Strategies, and other like subjects.                                                                                                                     3 UNITS: 3 HOURS LECTURE PER WEEK

FDSN 4122 SENIOR CREATIVE DESIGN LABORATORY II
Prerequisites: FDSN 4121, FDSN 4101, FDSN 4210
In this course, students will cover the collection of active wear development. This course reviews the collaboration process among designers, suppliers, merchandisers, and business partners in the creation of a fashion collection. The course teaches this process from both an analytical and a creative approach, covering the areas of research, concept, planning, style development, assortment balance, item development and final presentation. Emphasizes original design sketches of fashion collections. Exploring the components that form the cohesiveness of a collection as well as elements that introduce individual creativity and diversity, students develop both trade sketch and storyboard techniques.

FDSN 4212 CREATIVE DIGITAL DESIGN II
Prerequisite: FDSN 4211
An advanced course that explores the use of digital design tools for developing sophisticated imagery for visual communication. Assignments develop mastery of existing professional design solutions and demonstration of an understanding of typographic, layout and design nuances; then students design and execute original projects.

GNST 4530 ETHICS

MNFG 4222 ANALYSIS OF HAUTE COUTURE ACCESSORIES
Prerequisite: FDSN 3240, FDSN 4221
A current overview of Haute Couture garment design and its relationship to various accessories, with an emphasis on students developing patterns in this highly specialized area, as well as an analysis of merchandising industry to boost sales, and market research. Fashion merchandising for apparel designers. A course that examines merchandising concepts vital to successful business practices in the fashion industry. Stress is on issues contributing to the relationships and profitability of manufacturing and retailing.

FDSN 4140 GRAND FASHION SHOW PORTFOLIO
Prerequisite: FDSN 4102, FDSN 4122, FDSN 4212
Each student develops a collection in an individualized area of apparel specialization. A representative group of samples from the collection is completed through individual study under the guidance of an experienced design instructor. Students will also learn the digital skills applicable to their final portfolio. A four-week internship in the industry accompanies this course.

GNST 4410 MODERN ORGANIZATIONS AND GROUP PROCESSES
Prerequisite: GNST 3300
Introduces contemporary social organizations, patterns of leadership, and decision-making. Provides hands-on experience in managing cooperation and conflict as group members interested in goal attainment.

FDSN 4230 GRAND FASHION SHOW PREPARATION
Prerequisites: FDSN 4140, FDSN 4222
Applies only to Bachelor of Arts candidates. A cutting edge, intensive course that culminates with the presentation of the final collection. Supported and advised by a Professional Advisory Board Member and an Executive Member of ACA, the student will work with a pattern designer as a co-partner to perfect the debut collection, including accessories to present a complete fashion collection.

PDSN 4250 MODEL EVENTS
A course designed to develop the students' ability to fit garments properly to a live model by identifying and examining the different types of managerial models used among apparel companies.

GNST 4630 INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS
Prerequisites: GNST 4410, GNST 4530 
Reviews the origins of modern international economic theory and discusses present patterns of trade and finance, including the balance of payments and its economic effects, exchange rates, international commodity agreements, and tariff policies. Includes an analysis of the relationship between international economics and current U.S. economic problems.
