PDSN 0210 PATTERN DESIGN LABORATORY
This no-credit period is open to all students who need additional help in draping, pattern, drafting, tailoring, or sewing.

GNST 4101 STUDY TOUR IN EUROPE
An optional course. ACA will invite students to see the world of fashion through a visit to important industry and cultural events in Europe. The ability to judge significant factors of fashion and to analyze potential trends is developed. Students take field trips to major fashion houses, trade shows, and similar function. Special invitations to opera performances, art galleries, and museum exhibitions broaden creativity. The preparation of reports develops critical judgment. Prominent member of the fashion world lecture and give presentations as part of the course. Students will also turn in a research paper on a selected topic.

FDSN 1001 MODEL VIVANT I
The purpose of this course is to resolve the fears often associated with dimension and perspective drawing and to furnish students a working knowledge of the subject. Students will learn the basics of line drawing, the use of hand skill, hints on drawing circles, cylinders, and objects of different textures in perspective. Use of pencil, ball point pen, and different media will be explored.

PDSN 1201 MOULAGE I
Basic understanding of fundamental Three Dimensional draping procedures to create complicated silhouettes. Students develop original designs incorporating muslin, draping, transformed into flat pattern and finishing.

PDSN 1221 PATTERN STUDIO I
This course introduces students to basic sewing techniques with the ultimate goal of producing a sample sewing book. Importance of development of skills with industrial power sewing machine is emphasized. Also students complete sewing of basic bodice.

GNST 1000 ENGLISH COMPOSITION
Writing of essays. Reading for ideas. General review of grammar and mechanics with special attention to common usage errors. Spelling and punctuation, sentence development and variety, paragraph development, prewriting and outlining techniques, structure, and composition of the five paragraph essay are emphasized.                                                                                                                                                    3 UNITS: 3 HOURS LECTURE PER WEEK

PDSN 1202 MOULAGE II
Prerequisites: PDSN 1201, PDSN 1221
Understanding advanced Three Dimensional draping techniques, incorporating different elements of fabric selection, construction, including structures for sleeve and body styling, collar and finishing, with an emphasis on designer's expressions; sketching parallel to fashion designer curriculum. Dialogue on design analysis with fashion and pattern designers.

PDSN 1211 PATTERN DESIGN I                                                                                                    Prerequisites: PDSN 1201, PDSN 1221
Basic understanding of fundamental flat pattern making, detailed body measurements adapted to building bodice blocks on dotted paper. Each human body is unique. Thus, students will learn the theory of body form and the mastery of fitting different human bodies through the scientific application of measuring techniques. Class includes structures for sleeve and body styling. Course recommended for fashion design students.

PDSN 1222 PATTERN STUDIO II
Prerequisites: PDSN 1201, PDSN 1221
More advanced sewing techniques and garment production are introduced aimed at the fashion industry. Emphasis on fitting processing and the function of garment construction which are critical to the development of skills.

GNST 1600 SURVEY OF COLLEGE MATHEMATICS
This course reviews and applies statistics, metrics, and algebraic and geometric equations that are commonly applied to business practices. The emphasis is on the integration of mathematics in the business environment, especially the fashion industry.

CDSN 1041 COSTUME HISTORY I
A general survey course tracing the change of western clothing tradition as a source of fashion and design, set against the development of culture from antiquity to the 19TH century. Students begin with an exploration of the Western ideals of beauty and continue with a specific study of the major areas of fashion revivals: classic, exotic, country and romantic.

PDSN 1212 PATTERN DESIGN II
Prerequisites: PDSN 1211, PDSN 1202, PDSN 1222
An intermediate construction course, focusing on advanced use of the master pattern to create structures, including sleeves and body styling. Students will also learn the basics of dart manipulation.

PDSN 1223 PATTERN STUDIO III
Prerequisites: PDSN 1222, PDSN 1211, PDSN 1202
Emphasis on hands-on sewing techniques of different types of fabrication from finest to heavy fabric; working with intensive print works as well as lace, and more. This course will also introduce how to do hand stitches.

GNST 1101 HISTORY OF ART & CIVILIZATION I
An introduction to the ideas, society and arts of Western and non-Western civilization, from the ancient Greeks and the Renaissance through the end of the 18th Century, with an emphasis on the relationship of visual art forms to each other and the cultural and ideological context.

CDSN 1042 COSTUME HISTORY II
Prerequisite: FDSN 1041
The in-depth study of the universe of couture: fashion creators, trends and the political and cultural climate that has created men's and women's fashion from the beginning of the
19TH  century to the present day.

PDSN 1213 PATTERN DESIGN III
Prerequisites: PDSN 1212
Advanced use of the master pattern to learn variation of styling skirts; including pleated, wrap, and gaucho, circled, and more. In this course, the student will also work with pattern development that involves more advanced work. Style and fittings will be incorporated, as well as more advanced construction techniques will be utilized in garment production.

TDSN 1200 TEXTILE LAB
Students are introduced to the basic properties of textiles. Focus is placed on the identification of woven and non-woven fabrics. The course includes hands-on analysis of fabric swatches Students also gain practical experience in dye processes and burnt testing.

GNST 1500 HUMAN STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION

PDSN 2211 ADVANCED PATTERN DESIGN I
Prerequisites: PDSN 1213, PDSN 1223
This course provides a foundation in flat pattern making; separates and casual apparel for the sports wear market. Students work through carefully selected projects from the fashion design department students. Emphasis on interpretation of fashion sketches and their transformation from design to pattern making. Fundamentals of grading are introduced.

PDSN 2221 ADVANCED PATTERN STUDIO I
Prerequisites: PDSN 1223, PDSN 1213
This course teaches the technique of sewing to put together casual apparel for the sports wear market using current garment industry techniques. Emphasis is on identifying different fashion fabric for developing sewing techniques.

PDSN 2121 DIGITAL PATTERN STUDIO I
Prerequisites: PDSN 1213
Emphasis on digitizing and pattern modification of instantaneous on-screen digitizing, simultaneous modification of unlimited amount of pieces, display of three-pattern file, and more. This course will train future manufacturers with little need for extensive in-house pattern design.

GNST 2040 PUBLIC SPEAKING
Prerequisites: GNST 1000
A course in public speaking featuring narrative, persuasive, informational problem-solving and extemporaneous speeches presented to the class. The emphasis is on organization and use of supporting detail, clarity of content, and professional presentation techniques. This includes the quality of confidence, facility or delivery, and adeptness in using visual aids.

2ND YEAR / QUARTER 2

PDSN 2212 ADVANCED PATTERN DESIGN II
Prerequisites: PDSN 2211, PDSN 2221
Pattern making of stretch, knit, and woven fabric and its application to creative body contouring design for sports wear and evening wear. Working from the sketches of fashion design students, pattern maker students will apply denim techniques to functional active sports wear, and swim wear, in particular. Students gain confidence in their work through peer critique.

PDSN 2222 ADVANCED PATTERN STUDIO II
Prerequisites: PDSN 2221, PDSN 2211
In this course, students will learn the different uses of the industrial sewing machine and their application to stretch, knit, and woven fabric to create body contouring design for sports wear, denim, and evening wear.

PDSN 2122 DIGITAL PATTERN STUDIO II
Prerequisite: PDSN 2121, PDSN 2211, PDSN 2221
Students will learn module user-friendly digital pattern making, including layers piece design (self, lining, and fusible) for sewing consistency, automatic grading, and more.

GNST 2600 GENERAL ECONOMICS                                                                                                    Prerequisites: GNST 1600                                                                                                                                  A survey of basic microeconomic principles and problems. Students study the concepts of markets, supply and demand, GNP, inflation, monetary policy, and types of economic systems.

PDSN 2213 ADVANCED PATTERN DESIGN III
Prerequisites: PDSN 2212, PDSN 2222
Students are encouraged to analyze work of fashion designer's collection of active wear. Students will gain technical skills in different fabrics and their qualities related to active while putting together pattern. Introduction to ski wear, tennis, jogging, riding, sailing, golf and other sports wear. Students will make patterns based on fashion design student's work.

PDSN 2223 ADVANCED PATTERN STUDIO III
Prerequisites: PDSN 2222, PDSN 2212
Students will gain sewing techniques, familiarity with their qualities related to active wear with putting together garments, including ski wear, tennis, jogging, riding, sailing, golf and other sports.

TDSN 2020 EMBELLISHMENT
Prerequisite: FDSN 1200, FDSN 2112
Application of design principles to the embellishment of garments and accessories, with emphasis on techniques, creation of original designs, and fashion trends. Embellishment includes embroidery, silks screening, crystal and nail head, appliqué, etc. Techniques are developed through hands-on experimentation, as well as finishes and hand-printing or computer processing.

GNST 2300 INTRODUCTORY PSYCHOLOGY
Principles of human behavior; physiological foundations, influence of heredity and environment; sense-perception, attention, capacities and abilities; learning; emotion and motivation; special emphasis on personality development and adjustment. Special emphasis on states of consciousness: language, memory, learning and their relationship to the arts. Introduction to the theories of Freud and Jung; Behavioral and Humanist Psychology.

PDSN 2140 FASHION SHOW PORTFOLIO
Prerequisites: PDSN 2213, PDSN 2223, TDSN 2020
Each student develops a collection in an individualized area of apparel specialization. A representative group of samples from the collection is completed through individual study under the guidance of an experienced design instructor. MNFG 2220 CELL MANUFACTURING
Prerequisites: FDSN 2123, FDSN 2020, PDSN 1121
This course is an introduction to the apparel industry. Students will learn how the industry operates with regard to the creation, production and marketing of apparel. The purpose of the course is to introduce and communicate manufacturing processes. Students will develop a working relationship with fashion and pattern designers to gain working knowledge of terms and methods of the industry. Fashion and pattern designer/assistant fashion and pattern designer sample-room practices are incorporated.

PDSN 2230 FASHION SHOW PREPARATION
Prerequisites: PDSN 2213, PDSN 2223, TDSN 2020
Working with a fashion designer and a self-prepared fit model, the student completes two finished garments of a mini collection. Family members are invited to luncheon followed by the Fashion Show.

GNST 2510 SOCIOLOGY: “BUSINESS REALITIES”                                                                    Prerequisites: GNST 2600, GNST 2040, GNST 2300                                                                       “Business Realities” is an interdisciplinary social science course that concentrates on the transition each graduate encounters as they transform from a student to a business professional. The class emphasizes freelance issues such as self-marketing, pricing, copyright law, starting a business and financial considerations. 3RD YEAR / QUARTER 1

PDSN 3211 CREATIVE PATTERN DESIGN COLLECTION I
Prerequisite: PDSN 2230, PDSN 2223, PDSN 2213
Students learn the importance of a balanced collection of pattern making. Emphasis is on development of student's ability to follow the energy and mind of future fashion designers. Through hands-on training, students will sharpen their aesthetic eye for the fine line and silhouette of the elegance of the fashion body. This course will incorporate draping and flat pattern skills.

PDSN 3221 CREATIVE PATTERN STUDIO I
Prerequisite: PDSN 2230, PDSN 2223, PDSN 2213

Unique class set up by the President of ACA that explores the symbiotic relationship between pattern design and fashion design. This course is designed as an exercise for upcoming industry experience.

GNST 3000 ADVANCED COMPOSITION AND CRITICAL THINKING
Prerequisite: GNST 2040
Principles of critical thinking applied to writing and reading arguments on complex current moral issues and enduring questions; inductive and deductive reasoning; persuasion; introduction to fallacies; analysis and evaluation of appropriate prose models, including those employing methods of argument unique to specific disciplines; selective use of citation and documentation; writing of research papers. Students will also apply conceptual thinking to fashion design blending their creative impulses and cultural influences to present innovative design solutions to reach beyond popular forecasts.

PDSN 3222 CREATIVE PATTERN STUDIO II

An advanced course that develops conceptual and pattern sewing criteria techniques to prepare students to create their own sewing technique to execute completion of garment. Emphasis is on sewing detail, delicate fabric sewing construction, and more. This course is a prerequisite for the Gallery Show.

TDSN 3201 TEXTILE ENGINEERING I
Prerequisite: FDSN 1200, FDSN 2020
Students will further their understanding of fabric and printing techniques in order to produce fabric from their original artwork. Students will also be taught various advanced surface treatments on cloth, including burn-out and dying.

An introduction to the ideas, society and arts of Western and non-Western civilization, from the 19th century age of Realism through 20th  Century Modernism and Post-Modernism, with an emphasis on the relationship of visual art forms to each other and the cultural and ideological context.

PDSN 3120 INDUSTRIAL DIGITAL PATTERN STUDIO
Prerequisite: PDSN 2121, PDSN 3222, PDSN 3212
This course will teach students how to utilize techniques for future industry solutions by seizing the immediate opportunity to implement technology on their premises, with the advantage of expanding. Course includes unlimited number of styles, fabrics, layers and size per file and more.

PDSN 3240 FASHION ACCESSORIES AND PRODUCTION
Examines Haute Couture and expensive accessories using special techniques and fabric characteristic of high end market accessories, including hand bags, belts, scarves, shoes, and more. Students will design and create pieces.

GNST 3140 VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY                                                                                         Prerequisites: GNST 3102, GNST 2300                                                                                                   Visual Anthropology is an examination of visual culture and its representation by anthropologists. The course will look at universal meanings behind common visual symbols as well as the main patterns of difference between types of cultures. Throughout the course, videos made by anthropologists about other cultures will show the history of change in representation and the meaning of exotic visual symbols to Western culture as a whole.                                                                                                                                  3 UNITS: 3 HOURS LECTURE PER WEEK

TDSN 3210 INTERNATIONAL TEXTILES & APPAREL
Prerequisite: FDSN 3202
Study on textile material with an emphasis on the factors that produce a successful apparel fabric from international markets. Fabric characteristics such as appearance, drapability, hand, and performance, as well as sorting of fabrics for different levels of design markets are studied. Students will explore techniques for utilizing computers as a design tool.

MNFG 3220 INTERMEDIATE MANUFACTURING
Prerequisites: FDSN 2220, FDSN 3201
An intermediate course that explores the world of apparel manufacturing, including production, sourcing, control, planning, costing, resources, allocation and feasibility. Projects including following a product from concept to production and delivery of the product to the retailer.

MNFG 3221 ANALYSIS OF HAUTE COUTURE GARMENT DESIGN

A current overview of Haute Couture garment design, with an emphasis on students developing patterns in this highly specialized area.

Students will learn the environment that draws on their creativity and cultural influences to present innovative sports wear pattern design solutions that reach beyond current professional standards. Perfect body fitting solutions will be learned in various ways.

Based on the master pattern program, this course is designed to bring the creative aspect into the digital pattern design department. Emphasis on intelligent pleat, dart and sharing characteristic, extensive pattern design development, as flexible as manual pattern design, and much more.

MNFG 4222 ANALYSIS OF HAUTE COUTURE ACCESSORIES
Prerequisite: FDSN 3240, FDSN 4221
A current overview of Haute Couture garment design and its relationship to various accessories, with an emphasis on students developing patterns in this highly specialized area, as well as an analysis of merchandising industry to boost sales, and market research. Lectures by leaders practicing in their respective fields. Students will develop product knowledge, select resources, and apply research information to product line accessories.

Fashion merchandising for apparel designers. A course that examines merchandising concepts vital to successful business practices in the fashion industry. Stress is on issues contributing to the relationships and profitability of manufacturing and retailing.

A representative group of samples from the collection is completed through individual study under the guidance of an experienced design instructor. Students will also learn the digital skills applicable to their final portfolio. A four-week internship in the industry accompanies this course.

Introduces contemporary social organizations, patterns of leadership, and decision-making. Provides hands-on experience in managing cooperation and conflict as group members interested in goal attainment.

PDSN 4230 GRAND FASHION SHOW PREPARATION
Prerequisites: PDSN 4140, PDSN 4222, PDSN 4212, MNFG 4222, MNFG 4221
Applies only to Bachelor of Arts candidates. A cutting edge, intensive course that culminates with the presentation of the final collection. Supported and advised by a Professional Advisory Board Member and an Executive Member of ACA, the student will work with a fashion designer as a co-partner to perfect the debut collection, including accessories to present a complete fashion collection.

PDSN 4250 MODEL EVENTS
A course designed to develop the student's ability to fit garments properly to a live model by identifying and examining the different types of managerial models used among apparel companies.

GNST 4630 INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS
Prerequisites: GNST 4410, GNST 4530 
Reviews the origins of modern international economic theory and discusses present patterns of trade and finance, including the balance of payments and its economic effects, exchange rates, international commodity agreements, and tariff policies. Includes an analysis of the relationship between international economics and current U.S. economic problems.
